Apple TV 1.1
We are expecting the 2.0 update any day now, and I must say I'm looking forward to it. But I thought before it comes out I'd give my impressions of how the Apple TV works right now.
Just after the announcement at MacWorld that the Apple TV would be updated in 2 weeks I purchased one of my own. It's a love hate relationship for me. I plugged the Apple TV into my network, entered a code on my mac and the content I selected synched up with the Apple TV. A wonderfully Apple experience. It just worked, and did what I expected it to. Thanks to those who tested first on the internet, because it works great in 480i mode on my TV.
All the movies I synched look great. Its nice to be able to listen to music on my good speakers instead of the crappy ones attached to my iMac. I must say watching a podcast on the couch is 10 times the experience as watching it on a crappy chair in front of the computer. Pity half of them are such low quality.
Now for the hate. I said the initial sync was all Apple and worked great. Well that is where the fun ended. The Apple TV rarely shows up in iTunes anymore, and when it does 90% of the time when I tell it to sync I get a firewall error.
It is very frustrating to sit down to the Apple TV to watch a podcast only to realize it hasn't synched. Well what about streaming? That usually works but not always. I'm hoping the 2.0 update will fix my synching woes. If it doesn't I guess I'll buy a new router and see if that is somehow messing things up. I don't really see how it could be a problem, but I've been thinking of getting a gigabit router anyway so this is a decent excuse.
One of big selling points of the Apple TV to me was that I can put my daughters favorite movies on it so she won't ruin all of our DVD's. I've slowly been Handbraking them but it turns into a major pain to get them on the Apple TV.
From my experiences so far I would not recommend the Apple TV to my mom. Hopefully 2.0 changes that.
